You should be proud of your trainers.
Melanie and I competed last Sunday in one of the oldest triathlons in the USA. Morgan’s Little Miami.
There were 947 contestants and we did not come in last.
The race consisted of 6 miles of paddling on the canoe down the river, 5.5 miles of running through the country with “killer hill” awaiting our arrival, and 18 miles of bicycling.
After we saw the course our first goal was to just finish it. We started our training few months prior the event and our goals changed from just finishing to making it in 3.5 hours. We estimated that it should be enough time for us to make it to the finish line.
The night before our thoughts were racing. Were we ready? Had we done everything we needed to prepare?
Pre-race rituals were done. We had loaded our bodies with as much carbs as possible, pumped our tires on the bikes, packed our water resistant bags and laid our numbers and pins out.
6.45 am excitement was high.
Melanie’s start time was at 9.54 am and Greg’s 10.58 am
She took off with her race partner and never looked back. The river was rough and water was low so her canoe was difficult to maneuver.
An hour and twenty minutes later she was on her way back to the top of the river running as hard as she could. The hilly 5.5 mile run was hard but Melanie completed it with ease within 1 hours time.
In the meantime Shawn, my race partner, and I were in the water trying to push the canoe through the shallow parts of the river.
Killer hill is called that way for a reason. There were very few people who attempted to run it. At the end of 5 mile run climbing (I guess) the 20% incline for around quarter mile is something you don’t do for a leisure.
Finally the last event was 18 mile bike ride through Ft, Ancient and for me it was the easiest event.
Melanie completed the bike portion of the race within 1.10 h and I got to the finish in around 50 minutes.
Out of almost 1000 participants I placed 402nd with 3.18.45h and Melanie was 597th with 3.34.07h
Next Spring we are going to beat our times for sure.
